Activists belonging to the anti Muslim 969 movement have stopped prayers in religious institutions at the Thaketa Township of Rangoon on Monday.
Around a hundred activists gathered around the mosque and madrasa and forced the committee to sign a declaration saying there would no prayers in the institutions.
The committee was reportedly at a meeting with local authorities when the 969 activists gathered in the area. The 969 activists also pressurised the authorities to take a step further and close down the Muslim institutions altogether.
Thaketa has long been a bastion for anti Muslim sentiments. The mobilisation of the 969 movement in the Yangon area has been viewed by analysts as an attempt to stoke up tensions before the crucial November elections and thus garner support for the regime.
