State authorities in Akyab have increased vigilance on religious intellectuals.
This month, the state authorities are collecting information on the income and activities of all religious figures and the mosques they operate.
The government has long shut down many of the mosques in Akyab alleging they are being used for terrorist activities. Now the anti religion drive looks like it would be renewed with pressure being increased on the mosques and the people that operate them.
Mosques might be ordered to renew their registration and there are concerns that many more might be shut down.
Local sources say the pressure on religious figures comes amidst increased contacts with Middle Eastern countries.
