Agents of Arakan Army are asking Rohingya Muslims in Kyauktaw to take up arms against the Burmese armed forces. They are telling the Muslims that the riots of 2012 were sponsored by the state and not the fault of the Rakhine people.
The activities of the agents increased as the Burmese military has launched a brutal offensive against the AA which has driven them on the backfoot. Civilians in Rakhine villages are bearing the brunt of army crackdown. Food shortages are also common. Community leaders and educated individuals have been especially targeted.
Faced with a ferocious government onslaught, the AA is looking for ways to strenghten their base by enrolling support from the Muslims. In memory of the 2012 riots, it has become difficult.
So AA is stressing that the riots of 2012 were done by government sponsored men and not the Rakhine mainstream populace from where the insurgent group draws their support.
AA agents are also saying that the Muslims do not need to worry about weapons as there are plenty of them lying around. They have promised that in an Arakan liberated by the AA, they do not have to live like second class citizens.
Muslims are however saying that both the AA and the armed forces are their enemies till otherwise proven.
An earlier version of the report incorrectly mentioned the Arakan Amry as Arakan Liberation Army
