Two Rohingya lumberjacks have been robbed and assaulted by Natala men as they went to the hills.
On Wednesday, Md Sultan (45) and Md Ismail (37) went from Ore para, Rathedaung to the nearby hills. When they had finished chopping the wood, some Natala men suddenly pounced on them and started beating them mercilessly.
During the attack, the Natala cursed the Rohingyas with unprintable language. “We burned your homes, what more do we do to chase you from this country,” said one of them. All belongings were taken away after the assault.
The victims were originally displaced during the 2012 riots from Mujai and Anak parang.
The attackers are well known to the victims but they are fearful of filing any charges.
The Natala men in the area are involved in regular instances of robbery and assault.
Natala is a term used to refer to Buddhist settlers in Arakan who have been brought by the government from other parts of the country to balance out the Muslim population.
