A house belonging to Rohingya Muslims burned down mysteriously at Nagpura, Maungdaw on Thursday, according to our local correspondent.
At around 3pm, fire suddenly engulfed the house of Aminurul Islam (50), s/o Abdur Rahman. His wife, the sole occupant of the house managed to get out without injury.
Islam, a member of Tabligh-e-Jamaat was at a mosque in another village during this time. Police came to the house after some time and arrested his wife on charges of burning down their own house to discredit Buddhist nationalists.
Since then Islam has been on the run. His wife is still in police custody.
Incidents like this are increasingly common in Arakan. Houses burn down mysteriously and police arrest owners of the house or prevent them from raising new shelters. In each case police accuse the victims of setting fire to their own houses to shift the blame on Buddhist nationalist movements.
