The killing of yet another pregnant Rohingya woman at a Rakhine hospital confirms the chilly message that extremists have been trying to send to this minority Muslim community – – do not use our hospitals to increase your population!
Burma Times sources in Akyab have confirmed that a pregnant woman was killed by hospital staff at Sittwe General Hospital on Wednesday.
28 year old Salimah Begum was admitted to the hospital on the afternoon of January 7 after her pains got unbearable according to her relatives.
But at night, the hospital staff called them and informed them that both Salimah and the baby is dead. The dead body bore marks of torture.
Rohingyas are not welcome to the healthcare facilities of Arakan state, which are only reserved for the Buddhist population. Many desperate Rohingyas who have gone to avail medical treatment have been turned away and even killed.
The situation is especially bad for pregnant woman. Anti Muslim groups claim that Rohingyas are on a mission to multiply their population, and Buddhists have a sacred duty to ensure this does not happen.
Thus pregnant women have become a particular target and those who dare to go to hospital often turn up dead.
The same hospital staff injected a pregnant Rohingya woman to death in April last year.
Rohingya neighborhoods and IDP camps have almost no access to healthcare facilities. The almost one million strong Rohingya population is completely cut off from modern medical facilities.
The only organisation that provides Rohingyas with some access to healthcare is the medical charity MSF has been under fire from anti Muslim groups and cannot operate freely in Arakan.
