A woman in Maungdaw South has been gang raped by BGP men and a Rakhine miscreant on January 22, according to our local correspondent.
A team of five BGP men and a local Rakhine man came to a woman’s house in Bihamu para around daybreak. She was alone as the others had gone to work.
The BGP then told the woman that she needed to come with them to the nearby police station as she was suspected of possessing a Bangladeshi phone number.
Then instead of taking her to the police station, the woman was forced to the nearby fields outside the village where the BGP and their cohort raped her one by one till nightfall.
Her family were then contacted and informed she would never be seen again unless they paid ransom money.
After midnight, the family paid 150,000 kyats to the BGP men. They threatened the family not to disclose the incident to anyone.
She was then returned at around 2 am in the night. Following repeated threats, the family is passing their days in fear.
Local villagers know the Rakhine man by the name ‘Jouw’.
Rape incidents committed by the security forces and Rakhine miscreants is very common in the Arakan. Few of these incidents come to public knowledge because of reporting restrictions in Arakan.
