An army major whose subordinates had assaulted a rickshaw puller went to his home in Dabaing, Akyab on Tuesday.
During the public relations exercise that saw a large Rakhine media turnout, the major handed 10 kilograms of rice to the victim’s wife.
Locals say that during the assault, the soldiers from this battalion 376 kept all the money found with the rickshaw puller.
The Rakhine media present at the scene are also known for their anti Rohingya bias.
The major told the wife of Syed Noor that the victim was beaten up because he was creating chaos near the military checkpoint under the influence of narcotics.
Truth is Syed went to the area to drop off a Rakhine passenger when he was brutally beaten up by soldiers.
He was later refused treatment by local hospitals.
Locals allege the army major is making life worse for them since he assumed duties a month back.
