Two fishermen have been brutally assaulted by BGP in Kunir Hali, Maungdaw North.
Md Majid (48), s/o Md Shafi and Md Ayaz (26), s/o Md Siddique were returning from fishing in the river when the BGP demanded that they pay additional money.
Earlier, the fishermen had procured the proper permission from the authorities. The BGP in this region forces Muslims to pay money for the permission to fish.
This time however the permission did not help. The BGP threatened the two Muslims fishermen with dire consequences if they did not pay up. The Rohingyas told them that it was impossible to give anything more as they had a very bad catch.
At one stage, the BGP started beating the Muslims up. They continued the assault till their victims were unconscious. After that they walked away leaving the two men on the ground.
Later other fishermen found them lying in a pool of blood and got them medical care.
Authorities have put a squeeze on fishermen and wood collectors in the last few days depriving the Rohingyas out of their last remaining sources of livelihoods.
