Government has been trying to persuade Rohingya Muslims in Kyaukpyu to abandon their brehthen in Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Ratidaung and Akyab and instead join forces with them, according to locals in the area.
Since the past few days, government collaborators or tabbes have been convincing locals in some villages of the area that they are the only real Rohingyas while the rest are Bengalis and illegal immigrants. If the Rohingyas in Kyaukpyu would recognize the others as Bengalis, they would be welcomed as allies by the government and their troubles would end.
Kyaukpyu is geographically separated from the Muslim dominated areas of the Mayu Frontier area.
Locals appeared sceptical by the propaganda spearheaded by the tabbes perceiving it as a policy to divide and rule.
