Bangladesh police have accused local strongman Maulavi Bakhtiar Ahmed of utilising Rohingya refugees for drug trafficking, according to our correspondent.
It is alleged that Bakhtiar is also settling Rohingya refugees around the Kutupalong camp. For every house, Bakhtiar gets 10,000 to 15,000 from the refugees. Additionally Rohingya NGOs also pay Bakhtiar.
Also it is beleived that Bakhtiar only settles Rohingyas on one condition — they must be prepared to smuggle the banned narcotic product yaba. After decades of persecution, Rohingya families are desperate to flee their homeland.
Maulavi Bakhtiar is also known to embezzle money that foreign Muslim organisations donate for iftaar during the month of Ramadan and animal sacrifices during Eid ul Azha, according to police sources.
The former chairman has often been accused of anti Rohingya activities while at the same time forcing them for trafficking.
Bakhtiar has 30 odd strong men in his syndicate.
