15 Rohingya fishermen were arrested by the Bangladesh Coast Guard on Thursday. Bangladesh authorities say that they had entered Bangladeshi waters illegally.
The arrested Rohingyas are Md Shofi, Amir Hossian, Abdul Nobi, Abdul Shukkur, Md Mobashar, Nurul Boshor, Monjur Alam, Md Younus, Hamid Hossian, Nojir Ahamed, Abdur Ahamed, Md Ismail, Zafor Ali, Md Nasir and Nobi Hossian
The two fishing boats were also seized by the coast guard. The arrested Rohingyas were later handed over to customs officials who sent them to Teknaf Model Thana (police station).
The Rohingyas are from Akyab, the state capital of Arakan which is not a bordering Bangladeshi state. There is however little evidence to suggest that the arrested Rohingyas were planning a long term migration to Bangladeshi territory.
There are at least 400,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi authorities are determined to stop the further entry of Rohingyas into their country and are especially vigilant in this season which is the traditional entry time.
There are hundreds of Rohingyas in Bangladesh jail who authorities say are illegal immigrants.
