Bangladesh police have arrested two human traffickers at Shahporan ghat near the Burma border on Sunday night.
The arrested have been identified as Md Abdullah, s/o Md Sabbir and Ziaur Rahman s/o Manjir Alam.
The winter season is generally preferred for the sea journey.
Human traffickers in the region have cashed in on the misery of Rohingya Muslims. Those escaping by sea are generally held prisoner and ransomed in Thailand where the government has been accused of acting in cohorts with the traffickers.
In recent years, Rohingya Muslims have increasingly taken to the high seas for what they regard as the safe haven of Malaysia to escape brutal persecution at home. Up to 100,000 people are believed to have left Burma since 2013, according to Human Rights Watch.
The journey by sea is however extremely dangerous. But even in the winter season, the sea of the Bay of Bengal is rough and has claimed countless casualties.
Many Rohingyas travel to Malaysia from Bangladesh where they leave their families behind. Some Bangladeshis also join Rohingyas to seek fortune in Malaysia.
