Bangladesh is set to adopt tough measures against the Rakhine insurgent outfit Arakan Army after their militants opened fire and wounded a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) soldier on their side of the border.
According to sources and eyewitnesses, hundreds of Arakan Army insurgents have crossed over to Bangladesh following clashes with the Myanmar army earlier this year. However the border region in the Bandarban area of Bangladesh is extremely remote and inaccessible from their side. It is difficult for any conventional army to carry out a crackdown against guerrillas without the deployment of huge resources.
That seems likely to change as the Bangladesh media is reporting that soldiers from the regular Bangladesh army along with the paramilitary BGB are streaming into the area with the aim of flushing out the Rakhine militant outfit.
Bangladesh Home Minster Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has told the local media that government forces are ready to combat the Arakan Army.
Many Rakhines in Bangladesh are however sympathetic to the Arakan Army which wants to establish an Arakan state for the Rakhines only.
