The arrival of a group of Bangladeshi Rakhines at Nagpura, Maungdaw is causing panic among the local Rohingya Muslim population.
According to locals, a group of about 60 Rakhines from Bangladesh suddenly turned up in the area around 10 pm on Saturday night. They later participated at an anti Muslim demonstration the next afternoon.
A local man requesting anonymity says, “these Bangladeshis have a very tough and rough attitude. They don’t look and talk like normal people. We suspect they are hardened fighters.”
Their arrival without their families imply that they are not here to settle but for some other purpose. Many Bangladeshi Rakhines have been settled by the state government on Rohingya Muslim lands since the riots of 2012.
But these Rakhines seem to have some other purpose. Some locals think they are cadres of the Bangladesh group United People’s Democratic Front.
Meanwhile in Bangladesh, following schisms with both the Chakma tribe and the mainstream Bengali populace, some Bangladeshi Rakhines have started viewing neighbouring Arakan state, officially called Rakhine state as a more promising land.
The arrival of Bangladeshi Rakhines is being greeted with fanfare by local Rakhine groups. The last few days have seen an influx of Rakhine cadres from Bangladesh. One such group was arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh on February 7 with a considerable amount of money intended to fund anti-Muslim groups.
