Number of other arrests made throughout border region
Bangladesh villagers robbed Rohingya refugees trying to enter their territory at Taimbru on Friday, according to our correspondent.
The 29 Muslim refugees fleeing persecution in Burma were intercepted by local villagers who seized their belongings before handing them over to Bangladesh Border Guards.
The incident comes following a meeting organised by Bangladesh Border Guards in the area where a high ranking official requested locals to form vigilante groups to prevent Muslim refugees crossing over from Burma.
The last few weeks have seen increased attempts by Rohingya refugees to cross over as tensions mount over government decision to withdraw identity cards.
In a separate incident BGB pushed back 15 refugees on Sunday from the same area, according to our correspondent.
In another incident on Friday, 8 Rohingya fishermen were arrested by Bangladesh navy when their boat floated away accidentally in rough weather. The arrested fishermen were handed over to police who have confined them in the Teknaf model thana.
