Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Wycom seized the belongings and cash of a Rohingya refugee who had just crossed over from Burma, before sending him to police custody.
Md. Ilias (25) s/o Md Sayeed, a resident of the Maungdaw area had managed to enter Bangladesh on Saturday morning. He was on his way to the Kutupalong refugee camp when BGB intercepted him and asked for his identity.
Ilias told them in truth that he was a refugee from Burma. On hearing this, BGB seized his belongings, which included some new clothes and all his money. He was then sent to police custody.
Despite strict border controls, desperate Rohingya refugees enter Bangladesh almost every day especially during the winter season when the generally rough seas are a bit calmer.
At least 400,000 Rohingyas have fled to the neighbouring country following brutal persecution in Arakan where the present population is now estimated at less than a million.
