BGP opened fire on a group of Rohingya Muslims listening to a religious sermon in a mosque at the Kunkar IDP camp in Akyab.
Locals say that at around 10 pm on Tuesday, the BGP saw a group of Muslims in the mosque and suddenly opened fire at them. This caused the Muslims to flee the mosque.
No human casualties are reported.
The firing brought memories of the 2012 riots which started on June 3 of that year. The atmosphere in the IDP camps became extremely tense as rumours spread that a Rakhine mob attack backed by the BGP was imminent.
IDP residents of Akyab are one of the worst victims of the riots when mobs backed by security forces killed and raped countless Muslims.
Locals say that none of them slept on the night fearing the worst.
