Government has declared a blockade in the Fansi area of Buthidaung after Rohingyas refused to accept the green card.
On Wednesday, Lawaka officials accompanied by police and Hlun Htein arrived in front of a madrasa in Fansi and ordered local tabbes to bring the villagers for green card registration.
When the tabbes asked the Rohingyas to report for registration, they refused saying they are not willing to be identified as Bengalis. After waiting in the madrasa for some time, the Lawaka officials grew furious and left the area.
Following their departure, government officials said from this moment on, Rohingyas in the area are forbidden to leave their villages.
Most of the Rohingyas in the area depend on a livelihood collecting wood from the surrounding hills and the blockade is likely to hit them hard.
The green card scheme requires Rohingyas to register as Bengalis and apply for citizenship as naturalised foreigners. But Rohingyas vehemently deny they are Bengalis and refuse to sign up for the green card.
