Rohingya Muslim students are being assaulted and harassed by the head teacher at Bolibazar high school of Maungdaw North.
Although the locality is mostly Muslim, most students are Buddhists. Few Rohingyas in the area can cross the hurdles and reach high school. But those who can are facing the wrath of U Shwe, the head teacher of the school.
One of his means of harassment is to command students to bring their guardians after school. When the guardians come, the head teacher beats their child in front of the parents. During the beatings, Shwe curses the Rohingyas in racist slur demeaning the race and religion.
One of his most oft repeated quotes is that Islam makes people uncivilized and unworthy of being in school. He also says that Muslims are dirty.
Last week alone, four students have been harassed in this manner. Those students who fail to show up with their parents are turned out of the school.
Besides students have to put up with regular insults especially towards their Islamic faith.
There is only one Rohingya teacher in the entire school and he also faces harassment from Shwe.
