A boy was arrested and tortured by police for possessing a Bangladeshi mobile number on Tuesday.
14 year Saydur Rahman was having iftar in his shop at Dhang Hali, Maungdaw South when a police team raided the place. Within a few minutes, they came upon a Bangladeshi SIM card.
Saydur was taken into custody and beaten throughout the night. During the torture, Saydur was accused of passing information to Rohingya activists and media personal based in the neighbouring country.
He was released the nest day at around 11.30 am following a payment of 650,000 kyats.
Many Rohingyas in the frontier areas use Bangladesh phone numbers to keep in touch with friends and family in that country where the refugee population is close to half a million.
