A Rohingya community leader in Maungdaw has been killed on the night of January 25.
Locals say that 63 year old Md Jokir (s/o Md Oli), chairman of Hadir Beel Mayangkhali Fukkuttu was murdered at around 2.35 am.
His close associate 60 year old Md Zubair, (s/oThanda Mia) is in a critical situation after being injured by the killers. He is in a local hospital battling for his life.
Jokir died after the four unidentified men slashed him with sharp weapons. It is not clear whether they were Muslims or Rakhines.
Hadir Beel Mayangkhali Fukkuttu is close to Du Char Yar Taan (Kiladong) site of the massacre of at least 48 people, mainly women and children by a Rakhine mob backed by security forces.
The motive of the killers has not been confirmed. Some locals say that Jokir was a tabbe (collaborator) who was close to the government and his activities might have angered many Muslims in the area.
Others say that Rakhine miscreants might have committed the murder to spread terror and confusion in the area.
Meanwhile Muslims in the surrounding areas are passing their days in fear as they believe local collaborators might point out innocents as criminals in the case. The tense situation prevailing in Du Chee Tar Taan where security forces have intensified a crackdown in recent days has added to their fears.
