A newly wed couple escaped to Bangladesh after authorities tried to arrest them for getting married without permission.
Police have however fined their families in Merulla, Buthidaung.
Under Burma’s law, Rohingya Muslims cannot get married without permission from the authorities which comes at a high price.
The newly wed couple both belong to very poor families who could not afford permission from authorities. So they decided to get married in secret.
The Aishwaramu of the village tract somehow got alerted to the marriage and informed the police. Before the police arrived, the couple escaped.
They crossed the border on Saturday.
The couple has been identified as Noor Ayesha (19) and Nobi (21).
Noor Ayesha’s father Zahid Hossain has sold his house to raise 400,000 kyats for the police.
Nobi’s father Abdul Kabir is too poor to afford anything and he has borrowed 200,000 kyats from the girl’s family.
