Miscreants have taken away rice crops from the fields of Rohingya farmers in broad daylight.
On Saturday, scores of Rakhine men entered the rice fields near Putpalong, Mrauk U and started to pick up the rice crops that the Rohingyas were preparing to store away. During this robbery, hundreds of Rohingyas gathered around the area but did not dare protest. The Rakhines threatened them with dire consequences and said they did not have any right to harvest rice in this land as the soil belongs to the Rakhine people.
When the Rohingyas went to lodge a complaint, police officials repeated the statement of the miscreants and said that as Bengalis, they did not have any rights over this land.
As a result of this confiscation, many Rohingyas say they don’t have access to food for the entire season. It is also feared that these incident might be repeated in the next season.
Some of the Rohingyas broke down in tears when they described the hard work they had put in to grow this rice, effort that seemed largely wasted. The incident might also result in seious food shortages for some of the victim’s families.
