Fishermen from Hashurata, Maungdaw South have seen several dead bodies floating in the sea.
On Saturday, the fishermen went on a boat to fish in the sea. As they were returning from Sitaporika near the Bangladesh border, they saw several dead bodies and a woman swimming in the river crying for help. Not wanting to get into trouble, they came away from the area as quickly as possible.
When they got the news to the other villagers, they were heavily reprimanded for not helping the woman. The owner of the boat commanded them to go back and search for any survivors.
It is not clear what led to the deaths. However in recent days, traffickers have killed many migrants and thrown their bodies into the sea around the area.
In one such incident, last Sunday at least 30 men were thrown off the boat in Sitaporika. BGP was near the scene of the crime and did not interfere.
The ongoing crackdown in Thailand has forced many boats to come back to the coast. In some cases, traffickers unable to dispose of their human cargo simply kill them and throw them into the sea. Migrants are also thrown overboard for refusing to comply with orders.
