A Rohingya driver was detained and tortured by police for travelling without permission.
Nabi Hossain was returning from Buthidaung town to his home in Sidhar fara in Maungdaw town when police intercepted him and demanded to see his travel permit.
Nabi produced the permit but the police claimed it had expired 24 hours before. When Nabi protested saying there was a day left for his permit to expire, police started beating him up. In custody he was mercilessly tortured.
He was later released for a payment of 300,000 kyats.
Incidentally Rohingya Muslims are not allowed to travel from one area to another without prior permission. Many people breaking this rule have even been killed by Rakhine extremists and security forces.
