Eight Rohingyas who spoke to Reuters in Hashurata are likely to be detained as traffickers by Burmese authorities.
On May 22, the Burmese navy made its first rescue and claimed all 208 passengers on board were Bangladeshis. Those identified as Rohingyas were whisked away before the media and the UN arrived on the scene. An investigation by Reuters however confirmed that even out of the 208 migrants, at least 8 have confessed to be Rohingyas.
The authorities then back tracked from there earlier statement and said 200 were Bangladeshis. Now the authorities are preparing to prosecute the eight Rohingyas as traffickers while maintaining that all passengers were indeed Bangladeshis.
Burma wants to use as a proof that the boat people are not Rohingya Muslims driven out of the country.
