An elderly man drowned after their boat capsized near Longdoon in Maungdaw township.
Shawkat Ali died bravely after he refused to be rescued instead ordering his companions to save the child passengers first.
On Tuesday, Shwakat went to his patch of agricultural land south of Longdoon along with two children to help him with the agricultural work. Following evening prayers, Shawkat and his group along with three other men were returning by boat to their neighbourhood when the boat capsized.
As Shawkat was a respected religious man in the area, the three men who were expert swimmers concentrated on pulling him up. But Shawkat refused to be rescued and shouted at the men to save the children. By the time, the men had managed to pull up the children, Shawkat was not found.
The locals recovered Shawkat’s body on Monday morning.
