Security forces are extorting Rohingyas with family members abroad in Rabailla, Maungdaw North.
In the past few days, many Rohingyas who receive money from their relatives working in the Gulf countries and Malaysia have been extorted by police and BGP in the area. They are generally implicated with Bangladesh SIM cards and then accused of keeping in touch with Islamic terrorists based in the neighbouring country.
They are then forced to pay hefty ransom money.
Local sources say a 28 year man Bodi is guiding the security forces and giving them information on the families that have earning members abroad.
In the absence of other livelihood options and the crackdown on wood cutting and fishing, many families are surviving on money sent in from abroad. If that stops, Rohingyas fear their final end in Arakan state is not too far away.
