Advocacy group Arakan Project has warned more than fifty Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh found on a trafficking boat off the Burmese coast could face indefinite detention.
These refugees are not on the official records of either Bangladesh or Burma. While Bangladesh has taken back its citizens, and Burma has released some Rohingyas, albeit after heavy abuse, this group which consists of children and women are still being detained with little chance of their release.
“As they were unregistered refugees in Bangladesh, they will be excluded from the verification and repatriation process by Bangladesh and are not recorded in villages in Rakhine state either,” Lewa said.
“Their fate is uncertain and they may be detained indefinitely.”
On the other hand, Lewa praised the unusual speed with which the Bangladesh government have repatriated their citizens.
