Four fishermen from Sidhar para, Maungdaw have been severely assaulted by BGP men as they tried to go to fish.
Led by Noor Kabir, the fishermen were about to go the seas from Jadipara on Wednesday. They had earlier taken permission from BGP battalion 14 to go fishing that day after a payment of 3,000 kyats.
But as they went to sign the register at Showa camp, BGP personal told them that they could not fish because they were Muslims. When Noor protested saying that he had secured permission from higher officials of the BGP, he was severely beaten.
At one point of the assault he lost consciousness.
The three other men were also assaulted. During the assault, the BGP men said that this was the way they treated Muslims and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
In recent times, the authorities have cracked down on fishermen and wood collectors, the last two remaining source of livelihoods for Rohingya Muslims.
