Five Rohingya Muslims were tortured by police and BGP as their name was on the BD list, according to our correspondent.
The incident happened at Char Mile, Maungdaw on Thursday.
Md Rafique s/o Rashid Ahmed, Selim s/o Rashid Ahmed, Yusuf Ali s/o Hossain Ali, Joru s/o Sho Ali and Abdur Rashid s/o Abdur Shukkur were taken into custody and tortured.
The BD list was made during the controversial census by local Tabbes to identify people who are supposedly recent arrivals from the neighbouring state of Bangladesh.
Food shortages, lack of work and healthcare forces many Rohingya Muslims to cross over to Bangladesh where at least 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have already fled to escape persecution by the regime and anti-Muslim groups.
The arrested Rohingyas were released on condition they identified themselves as ‘Bengalis’ instead of Rohingyas.
Many Rohingyas have been arrested and tortured in the past year for identifying themselves by the term Rohingya instead of Bengali.
The government and many in Burma refuse to acknowledge the term Rohingya insisting that the Muslim community is comprised of Bengalis who had immigrated from the neighbouring country in a ploy to deprive them of citizenship.
