Five women arrested from Hashurata of Maungdaw South on Sunday face violent torture in police custody. The condition of one of them is especially critical as she seemed to have been transferred to another destination for questioning by higher officials.
The women were arrested from the tensed village tract a day after the shooting of infamous government collaborator Sawdeya Oo. They are the wife and daughters of men who police accuse of being involved in the shooting of Sawdeya. Locals deny the claim and say the men who are now absconding were simply in the area for business with the tabbe.
The condition of Sawdeya remains unclear but he was presumed to be alive as of Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, a close associate of Sawdeya, whom villagers identify as Ayatollah guided the police on a raid in the Medina para of Hashurata. Here police fell upon anyone in their sights.
One of the victims of police action, 15 year Bodi Alam said the police fell on everyone on the roads and assaulted them for no reason at all. After that, police broke into the homes of Rohingyas and assaulted many of the men.
Fearing further attacks by police and government collaborators, Rohingyas in Hashurata have left their homes for the nearby hills and woods.
