The Rakhine State Immigration and Population Department has asked Rohingya community leaders (Aishwaramu) to prepare a list of all elderly people aged over 80. The move comes as an initiative to identify people who has come from Bangladesh in more recent years and whose descendants are living illegally in the country according to Burmese law.
Burma says that most ‘Bengalis’ have crossed after independence to the country and falsely claims themselves as Rohingyas, a term not recognised by the government.
The Rakhine State Immigration and Population Department also asked Rohingyas in different areas of Maungdaw North to identify themselves as Bengalis in the census.
