Four people have been arrested from Gojjon Dhia in Maungdaw South on Friday night.
At around 11pm, police suddenly came into the village and found four men wandering outside. A search on their persons recovered four Bangladesh mobile phones. Immediately the police seized them and started beating them on allegations of co-ordinating the movement of terrorists based in the neighbouring country.
They were later taken to prison. Locals tried to negotiate their release by paying ransom money but the authorities refused and said they will be sentenced by the court on charges of terrorism.
The arrested men have been brutally tortured in custody.
They have been identified as Zahid Alam, Rahmat Ullah, Noor Mohammed and Zahid Ullah.
The village administration has alleged there is a presence of Bangladesh based terrorists in the area and no one is allowed outside their homes after 9pm.
Incidentally many people in these areas carry Bangladesh mobile phones to keep in touch with their friends and families based in that country and also elsewhere as the Burmese phone is too expensive. The authorities however claim the Bangladesh phones are used to co-ordinate terror activities.
