Four Rohingyas, including a six year child were arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday.
The family of four were in Bangladesh for medical reasons. The victims have been identified as Yasmin Akhter (40), Md Idris (25), Rokeya Begum (23) and Nobi Alam (6).
They were stopped at the BGB checkpoint in Morichya as they travelled to Cox’s Bazar for medical treatment. The arrested family have been charged in an illegal immigration case.
The victims were referred to Cox’s Bazar by the Teknaf medical which was unable to treat them. The family ran into trouble with the BGB as their visa had expired.
Rohingya Muslims are denied medical care by hospitals in Arakan state. Some Rohingyas admitted to hospitals have been murdered by staff. Under such circumstances, many have little choice but to cross over to Bangladesh for treatment.
But those who cross into Bangladesh also face harassment by security forces in that country.
