Four religious scholars were arrested by Bangladesh police in Hathzari as they came to attend a madrasa for religious education.
They were arrested on Thursday on charges of coming to Bangladesh for colluding with an Islamist political outfit.
Local sources however say the men were here only for educational purposes and have little knowledge and involvement in Bangladesh political affairs.
One of the arrested men is reported to have said that they were here because the mosques and madrasas of Arakan state are being closed down and those who study religion in that country face arrest and torture. They had hoped that Muslim Bangladesh would be more supportive of their religious aspirations.
The arrested men are newcomers to Bangladesh.
