There are reports that the police are preparing an extensive list of Rohingya activists involved in social work and human rights. When the time comes, these people shall be arrested on allegations of human trafficking.
Sources say that the Burmese government feels obligated to the international pressure to arrest human traffickers. However even here, the regime plans to take maximum advantage out of a bad situation. Most Rohingyas actually involved in the trafficking business are close to the government. Also the government organisations, especially the BGP is involved in the human trafficking business.
The government has used human trafficking to expel Rohingya Muslims from the country. Security forces are also involved in the kidnapping of Rohingyas. Sometimes security forces have pushed Rohingyas into the sea where traffickers lie in wait for them. The multi million dollar business not only enriches the government but also fulfils the objective of driving the Muslims away.
On the other hand, the role of many Rohingyas, especially those who have attended schools and colleges is irking the government. They feel that by standing up for the rights of Muslims and helping them in distress situations, these Rohingyas are planning to incite both the local population and the international community against the government.
The regime feels that once the back bone of the last remaining Rohingyas are broken, there will be no further resistance from the community. So with one shot, the government aims to destroy these Rohingyas and also show the international community it tends to counter human trafficking.
The regime is known for torturing arrested Rohingyas in custody to stifle resistance. Since 2012, thousands have been arrested and tortured mercilessly in custody. More than a hundred people have died in the process.
