Lawaka officials aided by security forces took up positions east of Bolibazar in Maungdaw North on Monday and intercepted Rohingyas going to the main town.
Each and every Rohingya passing through the road were detained till 5pm. They were given a lecture on how it would soon be impossible to travel without green cards and they will face severe difficulties if they continue to refuse the government overture.
Green card is an identity paper given to naturalised foreigners of Myanmar. Rohingyas applying for the green card will have to identify themselves as Bengalis who will then become naturalised as Burmese citizens.
Rohingyas deny this identity tag and say they are not Bengalis but indigenous to Arakan state. In the past few weeks, the tensions over the green card appear to be increasing.
On the other hand, hard line nationalists are also demanding the Rohingyas not be given any form of citizenship even if it is the green card.
