A trawler destined to take illegal migrants to Thailand is currently waiting (as of midnight February 28) east of the St Martin’s Island in Bangladesh, according to our local correspondent.
Migrants ready to make the journey are waiting nearby for the appropriate moment to board the trawler.
Reliable sources say that the trawler belongs to notorious human trafficking kingpin Din Mohammed. The trafficker had earlier beaten two migrants to death in Thailand on Thursday for failing to pay the fare for the illegal journey.
Bangladesh authorities are aware of the presence of the trawler but are yet to take action.
Thousands of Rohingyas risk the perilous journey to Malaysia through Thailand. The journey can only be done in winter when the seas are a bit calmer. Even then, hundreds die at sea. Others are killed by human traffickers for failing to make payment.
