Hundreds of people joined a protest march in Yangon on Wednesday asking the international community to stop blaming Burma for the migrant crisis as the boat people were not Burmese nationals.
“Boat people are from Bangladesh, stop making story of Rohingya, stop lying for Rohingya, no Rohingya in Myanmar,” the demonstrators shouted in Burmese and English.
The demonstration was organised by Ha Pyar Zar, an umbrella group that brings together nationalist organisations Rakhine Youth, the Myanmar National Network and Rakhine Rakeda.
About 40 monks believed to be from the Ma Ba Tha movement also joined the protests.
Demonstrators say that Muslims are trying to take over the Buddhist majority nation and it is unfair to blame them for the current boat people crisis.
Independent estimates however put the number of Muslims at 4 to 5 per cent of the population.
