Burma Times: 18 May 2015
An Italian rights activist was invited to speak at a meeting of the Human Rights Commission in the country’s senate on the matter of the Rohingya Muslim community of Arakan in Burma. Matteo Ariano presented the sufferings of the Rohingya Muslims and the persecution they faced in the hands of the regime and nationalist groups.
Senators listening to Ariano reacted with shock but seemed very enthusiastic to do something about the plight of the Rohingya people. Many confessed that they had little knowledge about the Rohingyas and some had never even heard about the term.
At the end of the debate, the President of Commission, Sen. Luigi Manconi, said he shall present a political enquiry to the Foreign Affairs Minister to the country to ask him what the Italian government intends to do to help the Rohingya people.
Mr. Matteo Ariano who is one of the advisory member, is working in co-operation with ERC.
