Local villagers in Khadir Beel and their relatives based in Malaysia are figuring out ways to secure the release of Master Ershad Ullah.
Ershad was arrested by police on charges of murdering a pro government community leader Md Jokir on January 25. Ershad later ‘confessed’ to the murder of Jokir after he faced intense torture in police custody.
Locals believe that Ershad gave the confession only to stave off brutal torture and he had nothing to do with the murder. However the confession has complicated the matter and it is not clear how Ershad can be released. Earlier police released Ershad for a day after a large amount of money was given to them, only to arrest him again the next day.
Ershad is popular among locals for his humanitarian work and commitment to justice.
