Two Rohingya men have been kidnapped and taken to Thailand on a smuggling boat from Shah para, Teknaf in Bangladesh, according to our correspondent.
The victims, Solim Ullah s/o Sultan Ahmed and Md Harun s/o Abdur Rashid, both of them from Leda refugee camp have been missing for more than a week.
On Wednesday, an astounded wife of Sultan rceived a phone call from her husband informing her that he was in Thailand. The wife was at first furious that the man had left the starving family for Thailand without any prior notice but soon she understood that he was under immense torture. Sultan informed his wife that along with Harun they were being taken on a ‘Malaysia’ boat against their wishes. Now their captors were demanding ransom to stop the torture.
Torture of Rohingyas are common in Thailand, where human traffickers operate a mutli million dollar human trafficking enterprise in cohorts with local authorities. The torture continues till their families pay the negotiated amount
Sultan asked the money to be paid to Joshim Uddin, a notorious human trafficker. Ransom money has been negotiated at 160,000 taka per person
Our sources say that it was this man Joshim Uddin who lured the two Rohingya refugees away with promises of a good work in Teknaf. Both the men are day labourers. When they were not heard off from the beginning of this month, their families contacted Joshim. He denied having no knowledge of the whereabouts of the two men and said they had left him to work for someone else.
The two men are poor day labourers and their families cannot afford the ransom money.
