Police arrested a Rohingya Muslim man in the restive village tract of Kiladong on Wednesday.
Lalaiya (33) s/o Mokbul Ahmed had come to the house of his in laws for dinner during evening when police surrounded the house and arrested him. Following the murder of notorious village headman Md Sultan Ahmed, all Kiladong men had fled to the hills to evade harassment by security forces.
Laliya came to the house because it is in a remote place by the hills.
Since his arrest, sources say he has been brutally tortured by the police. Authorities want him to confess to the killings of Sultan.
Villagers told Burma Times that the arrested man had nothing to do with the murder.
Police and BGP are also keeping the pressure on adjoining villages so as to prevent Kiladong men from seeking shelter there.
Tensions have been high in Kiladong since January 2014 when a Rakhine mob backed by security forces killed scores of Muslims, especially women and children in a night attack.
