The Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Zahid Hamidi refused to discuss the affairs of Rohingyas in a regional meeting on Thursday.
“We shouldn’t be involved in their domestic matters,” the Malaysian minister was quoted as saying.
Deputy Home Affairs Minister Kyaw Kyaw Tun represented Burma in this meeting. The Malaysian minister also claimed that Burma shall do more to bust human trafficking syndicates.
Reports on the ground however say that human trafficking syndicates remain well protected by the security forces.
Meanwhile Singapore has pledged 200,000 dollars for the Rohingya boat people as South East Asian countries look forward to setting up a fund for the migrants.
The meeting is a follow up to the Bangkok conference hosted in late May. The Bangkok meeting, highly anticipated at that time failed to provide any tangible solution.
In a press statement given by Malaysia it was stated, ‘the trust fund will be administered by the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations secretariat based in Jakarta.’
