A Malaysian immigrant has been arrested by BGP as he came home to see his family in Nara Bil, Maungdaw North.
Nabi s/o Abdul Salam (50) had been waiting over the border for the last few months looking for an opportune moment to cross over. He went to Malaysia about five years ago and has not seen his family since then.
As Rohingya Muslims escaping abroad are arrested when they return, Nabi was exploring ways to enter the country safely. A local tabbe Solim Ullah, also the Aishwaramu of the area contacted him through relatives and said that he can enter safely if he agrees to pay 2 million kyats.
The payment was made and Nabi arrived in Nara Bil a few days ago. Once he had settled, Solim however told him that he must pay more money. Nabi refused saying he had nothing left.
This led Solim to inform the BGP that a Muslim terrorist was in the village and Nabi was arrested on Friday. He is now in Buthidaung prison where he faces possible torture.
Scores of Muslim prisoners have died under torture in custody since 2012.
Another man Mahmud Ullah (26), s/o Md Amin had entered Nara Bil under similar circumstances. However he escaped when he witnessed the arrest of Nabi.
