Police arrested and tortured a Rohingya man in a case of mistaken identity at Dhang Hali of Maungdaw South. The arrest was made in connection to the shooting of infamous tabbe Sawdeya.
At around 5am, the security forces surrounded the house of Abdur Rahman and arrested him as he was sleeping. He was assaulted in front of his terrified family members and taken to base.
Here after hours of intense torture, police discovered they were looking for a different Abdur Rahman. The arrested man had the same name as a man from Hashurata who was absconding for being wanted in the shooting of tabbe Sawdeya.
As the police all over Arakan state were alerted to the name of Abdur Rahman, some officials in this area thought it was a man with the same name in their locality.
Abdur Rahman was however not released until the next day and only after the payment of half a million kyats. He is currently in a critical condition.
