Police arrested a man in Kullung, Maungdaw South on charges of passing information to Rohingya activists based in Bangladesh.
Mujibullah, s/o Azizur Rahman was stopped by police on Friday who were in the area to aid immigration officials conduct the controversial census.
Mujibullah told police that he was a resident of Kullung but police claimed to have information that he was travelling back from Bangladesh where he was passing information to Rohingya activists.
He was then taken to camp and heavily assaulted by police.
Later they demanded payment of 200,000 kyats for his release.
Mujibullah managed to negotiate a release for 80,000 kyats.
Locals say that Mujibullah had never traveled to Bangladesh.
