A man lost his eye in an assault by two soldiers on Saturday in Maungdaw South.
At around 6.30pm, 26 year Abdul Halim was travelling towards Warca from Monnama in Maungdaw North to visit his sister when two soldiers spotted him. They asked Halim to show his travel permit and id papers.
When Halim showed only his id, the two soldiers fell upon him and assaulted him. At one point Halim lost consciousness. Later villagers found him and took him to Maungdaw town.
He is in a critical condition.
Under the draconian laws of the state, Rohingya Muslims are not allowed to travel outside their zones without permission. Many have even been killed for travelling to another village without permission.
The restrictions on movement has created near starvation circumstances in many poor villages where work is not available. As Rohingyas are not allowed to travel outside their villages even for work, many have no income.
